Preliminary structural design
North West Engineering has developed the preliminary structural design for a tower in the “New Marina Casablanca” tourist compound. The 167m tower is an irregular polygon with ten sides and 47 storeys. Each floor is 800 square metres in area and is at a 3° angle to the one below: for this reason the tower columns are inclined and the overall shape of the tower is of a “torque effect”. The structure will have a reinforced concrete frame – the core will be made using semicircular reinforced concrete walls, while the floors will be built using solid reinforced concrete slabs. Aerodynamic analysis of the building has shown the external pressure of the wind on the façade and on the structural frame. The choice of foundation type is another important design step: raft foundation by means of a pre-stressed concrete slab 3 metres thick handles the high pressure of this tall building. Masera Engineering Group’s Geotechnical sector has played a key role in selecting the best foundation structure for this project.
