SYNOPSIS

Geomechanical soil investigation, specialist consultancy work on the mechanical behaviour of the tunnel during excavation phase, technical support in choosing the excavating machine.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Initially, Studio Masera Ingegneria carried out geotechnical and hydraulic investigation of the soil features along the track of the hydraulic tunnel to get a complete picture of the tunnel stratigraphy. Analysis revealed potential excavation problems arising from the characteristics of the soil.

Modelling of the tunnel was carried out using the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the data analysis was compared with the traditional method of tunnel analysis.

This modelling work highlighted the strain behaviour of the tunnel during and after the excavation phase and enabled special attention to be paid to the plastic zone around the tunnel.

Once this research phase had been completed, technical opinions on the best choice of excavation technique were given and a preliminary design of the provisional tunnel supports during excavation was carried out.
